Xiaomi officially revealed that its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will come with 5G support and a massive 10GB RAM. The official confirmation came right after the company teased both specifications as part of a cryptic teaser with “5G” and “10G” imprinted in Yellow on two Red-colored handbooks.
This means that Xiaomi will be among the first lot of devices in the market to support 5G connectivity months, if not years before the official roll-out of 5G network across the globe. In addition to the connectivity, 10GB RAM will also be a first for the smartphone as no other company has launched a device with this much RAM.
As for the 10GB of RAM speculation, this would be the first smartphone from a major manufacturer to carry such memory, pending the surprise release of the rumored Oppo Find X 10GB RAM model. The big question is whether 10GB of RAM is warranted on a smartphone.
Let’s face it, 10GB of RAM is excessive, and will likely mostly serve as bragging rights, but the 5G networks are coming shortly and they might be a big deal. While most markets won’t get them before late 2019 and that’s us being optimistic, it’s probably good to be prepared for that.
What slightly bothers us is that there aren’t any 5G-supporting chipsets in the market yet, so the Mi Mix 3 will most probably need to adopt an external modem – likely one of Qualcomm’s X24 or X50 working side by side with the Snapdragon 845, which in turn will affect battery life in a negative way. Or the phone might just wait for the Snapdragon 8150 to arrive before entering production, which would suggest it’s not coming until next year.
